A previously undiscovered type of bee has been found to be the key to regulating a hive's temperature.
The "heater bees" act like living radiators by regulating the temperature inside the hive. In addition to this role the heater bees are also involved in determining the social make-up within a bee colony.
The secret of honey bees' success has been discovered living deep inside their hives - a special type of bee which acts like a living radiator, warming the nest and controlling the colony's complex social structure.

I have heard of different conspiracy theories with bees, but this is a new one.

From the article: "In the past beekeepers have seen these empty cells as undesirable..." It never ceases to amaze me that when 'experts' don't understand the reason something exists they decide it doesn't have a reason and is therefore 'useless'. Whether it's body parts (tonsils used to be thought useless, not sure what they think now) or empty cells, people seem to have a hard time knowing that they don't know everything.

"In the past beekeepers have seen these empty cells as undesirable and have attempted to breed queens that did not leave them empty, but Professor Tautz now claims they are an essential part of ensuring the health of a bee colony." Wow. Looks like we came close to altering the queen bee in a very bad way.
