President Obama has renewed the country's committment to manned space program in a speech on Thursday.
"The bottom line is, nobody is more committed to manned spaceflight, to human exploration of space than I am," he told attendees at the White House. "We've got to do it in a smart way and we can't just keep on doing the same old things we've been doing and thinking that's going to get us where we want to go."
Pointing to Mars and asteroids as destinations, President Obama on Thursday forcefully countered criticisms that he was trying to end the nation’s human spaceflight program.

Well, the space program is fairly important. The long range space exploration is ultimately unimportant, but we do need to keep our satellites for our communications. People would be very upset if they lost their TV or cell phone.

ROFLFLFLFLLF...that is like every other president vowing to 'renew'..that means hell no ugh, I'd rather they just tell us they give us nothing, than give us lies of nothing..that's worse. Plus, even if the last part was true there is "no one more committed than I am" to this program..only because it is in his best interest and not ours. I mean woot space programs..but it annoys me when we are having huge debates over this, yet people are starving.and we are like noooo lets do this first...before we feed someone

Abandoning the Constellation program and Ares booster rockets is essentially billions of dollars wasted. And now he wants to waste billions of more dollars and more time into designing a new booster rocket? I do agree though that passing Earth orbit operations to private enterprise is a smart move,as the ISS is pretty much a complete waste of time anyway. I'm still skeptical of how this will relate to Russia who already have a working booster rocket program, we will have to pay the Russians to move our astronaut into space. Obama's plan is,like every other presidents, overly ambitious. But ove... [More]

I don't take issue with that, only with your claim that NASA's efforts have amounted to 'glossy wallpaper images and spy satellites', which is a gross oversight of the reality of the situation. Loosen up champ, that's just my humor. Where do you think the money goes, exactly? These missions costs what they do for a reason, substantial amounts of research are invested in to such a broad spectrum of different fields that it's hard to describe, and this research is extremely valuable in itself. What do you want to find out? Where will you go? How will you get there and return safely? What do you n... [More]

I wonder what's behind it! Other than all the money.

I've always believed that Pres Obama did not care at all for the Space Program, as it did nothing directly for him. So he was working to kill it. I wonder what has caused this change of heart? Almost undoubtably it is Politics. Trying to win over a few Swing Voters for the fall.

It may not be imediatly but the day will come. Why not start the nessesary research now.

Commitment to more human exploration yet NASA & GM have Robonauts ready assist our human astronauts. Wonder if human astronauts eventually become obsolete, replaced with more reliable more efficient R2s(?) Looks like you were on the money FootBeef, with 'private' corporate investments.

could be that you were wrong in your initial supposition. It is possible. It was just an assumption based on my knowledge of Pres. Obama's history and political style.
