Instead were trying to have conversations that might take thousands of years. A signal we pick up might be thousands of years old and they might have jumped from type 1 to type 2 or 3 by the time we get it.

Might I propose that it isn't the other civilization that is the problem; we as a species are extremely anthropomorphic and whether its through instinct or ignorance, we project our own concepts, expectations and ideas upon what we expect to exist, and expect it/them to act accordingly.
