A jail in New Jersey has taken to scanning detainees with a device designed to detect an intent to commit hostile acts.
The system called Cogito, "emulates the work of an interrogation expert and can accurately expose hostile intents and hidden information in as little as five minutes".
Developed by Israeli-based Suspect Detection Systems, Cogito uses sensors to measure a subject's psycho-physiological responses, similar to a polygraph.

I don't like the idea of mind-reading technology I don't either ... although perhaps it could be useful before releasing pedophiles back into society from their rehabilitation programs or whatever they do for them. It may be able to scan to see if they really have been rehabilitated prior to release.

This does not, in any way, shape, or for, look into your thoughts and determine what you are thinking. Oh, for heaven's sake...this is why I detest sensationalistic headlines! This is NOT a "mind-reading" device. This does not, in any way, shape, or for, look into your thoughts and determine what you are thinking. All that this software does is look at your general body language and determine if you are about to engage in violent action. Basically, it does the exact same thing that an alert guard is doing when he is on watch. It cannot predict any specific action in the far future. All it can do is indicate when there is a high probability of imminent violence. And, again, NO ONE is saying that... [More]

The title of the thread does say "mind reading" in it though,so I think we can be forgiven for misinterpreting the article(which I myself did the first time round)

To everyone about the sensationalistic headline, I would like to apologize. I was just posting what the headline was and did not think about the sensationalism that it contained. I suppose, in posting the subject, I was reacting off of my knee-jerk reaction at the time about the article. I will keep this in mind next time I have such a reaction to an article, then I will reconsider how I should post the headline and what I write in the opening post, as well. I'm not a person who has a problem admitting when I've made a mistake, so I appreciate the points all of you, especially aquatus (althoug... [More]

Nah, it ain't you. It's journalism in general. They have, over the decades, gotten further and further away from real news, real data. It used to be about the hunt for data and even for truth. Somewhere along the line, it became the hunt for new subscribers. Headlines became hooks rather than deors, and implications and accusations took the place of research and deduction. But that's the media. And, honestly, we did it to ourselves. They pander to our tastes. It is on us to become intellectually stronger and more demanding. Headlines like this should not be cheered, and certainly not shared, n... [More]

Aquatus, I agreed with everything that you said in your latest post. Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in the sensationalism that is displayed by most of the large media outlets, which I admit is partly what happened to me here. Like you said, most of the mainstream media is just pandering to people's tastes and preying on their fears to get more viewers. I think that the commercialization of news is to blame for this latest surge in sensationalism. Some of these newspapers, cable news channels, magazines, and other outlets for media started off with the goal of showing others the truth... [More]

I would imagine a lot of prisoners will be spending more time in there cell's as how many inmates have warm fuzzy feelings toward there jailers.

if you watch interviews with prison guards they all say they can pretty much read a prisoner body language and know when something is about jump off.they can also the tension in the air along with a 100 other things they learn from working in a life and death situation. the guards are most in danger when they are walking up to or passing by a cell, they get stabbed, speared.gassed (body fluids that have been saved up for weeks some times heated to boiling point and thrown on officer wile they walk past the cell. imagine how safer the guards job could be if a red light would go off outside the ce... I work in a prison. This kind of device would be exremely helpful, if it worked. Someone posted that if it were used on violent offenders it would be OK. Just because a person in jail or prison as a non-violent offender, doesn't mean he/she wasn't in the past or will be in the future. You talk about individual cells and just sending them back for an infraction. What about the prisons that are designed, like the I work in, with open dorms. There are anywhere between 25 to 75 inmates in a dorm or "pod" as we refer to them. Under this circumstance , if the device worked, lockdown would be the bes... [More]
