Not the first time I've heard this. Back in the Khmer empire they use to have woman warriors as well, not to mention the first ruler was a warrior-queen herself.

While a openly female gladiator fires the imagination. Another posibility exists. That she was gender/sex ambiguous. My grandma could bust apples and walnuts with one hand. A chicken attacked her once and she pinched it's head and it walked backwards for the rest of it's life..keep in mind this was just a couple generations ago! Back in the day women were just as tough as the men were, and a darn sight meaner!! I bet this woman gladiator looked like the Amazonians from Futurama
