Archaeologists find body of 'female gladiator'

The remains of a female gladiator from the Roman occupation of Britain have been found in Herefordshire.
Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a 'massive, muscular woman' who may have been a female gladiator during the Roman occupation of Britain.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Glad to know we had the opportunity to kick butt, even back then. I wonder what was up with her expensive coffin, it's an interesting mystery.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Plato himself wrote (I believe it was in the Republic) that women should at least learn to read write, get some basic of philosophy so they could raise their children better. Which demonstrate that women who were not citizens in Greece didn't have equal right. If that changed slightly in Roman times, most women were still not considered much and there were no elected women leader. Not the first time I've heard this. Back in the Khmer empire they use to have woman warriors as well, not to mention the first ruler was a warrior-queen herself.

While a openly female gladiator fires the imagination. Another posibility exists. That she was gender/sex ambiguous. There are those today who are that and undoubtedly they existed in antiquity as well. My grandma could bust apples and walnuts with one hand. A chicken attacked her once and she pinched it's head and it walked backwards for the rest of it's life..keep in mind this was just a couple generations ago! Back in the day women were just as tough as the men were, and a darn sight meaner!! I bet this woman gladiator looked like the Amazonians from Futurama
