A hotel in Abu Dhabi is celebrating the festive season with a jewel-encrusted tree worth $11 million.
Unlike a conventional tree decorated with tinsel and baubles the exquisite Emirates Palace hotel has opted instead for one that is draped with jewelry, precious stones, watches and other valuables.
A glitzy hotel in Abu Dhabi has put on show a jewel-encrusted Christmas tree which it says is worth over $11m (£7m). Items of jewellery studded with scores of precious stones are draped on the tree's branches, along with more traditional baubles and lights.

Now that is something else! I have a some Swarovski tree ornaments and I love them. If I ever get enough I'll have another little themed tree. lol I buy tons of Swarovski crystals to work into my jewelry designs. Nothing sparkles quite like Swaro's, cept maybe diamonds. Swarovski is a company I respect a great deal. They sell a very high quality product for a fair price (although not cheap), and they listen avidly to their customers and act on customer requests. Two thumbs up.

I wish I'd started collecting them years ago. Most of us have stopped giving gifts for Christmas, but we used to buy whatever someone was collecting for them.

You could always make your own Swarovski ornaments! I don't have one in this photo (although the far left, and the very center ornament DO have Swarovski pearls in the fringe) I've made these completely out of Swarovski, I just don't do them very often (ok, only twice before) because even at wholesale prices, I have to put about $120 worth of crystals into them. LOL. Makes them a little cost prohibitive to sell to your average tree decorator.LOL.

If even one person in Abu Dhabi is hungry or homeless, then I think this is a gross display of unearned, undeserved wealth. If I were a rich person, I would not be able to enjoy my wealth unless I thought I was doing something with my money to make life easier for others. Can't for the life of me see how hanging pricey baubles on a tree is helping anyone out...

Do you go to the mall and complain about all of the items the stores have for sale, simply because they may be expensive?

I think some of you guys are missing the point...it is a jewelry store display. Do you go to the mall and complain about all of the items the stores have for sale, simply because they may be expensive? No, Michelle, I'm not missing the point - it is an ostentacious display of wealth at a time of year when most people are of a mindset that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Christmas should not be about how many hundred thousand dollar baubles you can sell by hanging them on a tree. It should be about giving and providing for those less fortunate than ourselves and I don't see an $11M ... [More]

Christmas should not be about how many hundred thousand dollar baubles you can sell by hanging them on a tree. It should be about giving and providing for those less fortunate than ourselves and I don't see an $11M tree doing any of that...just my humble opinion, you understand. And just for the record, I stay as far away from the malls as humanly possible from Thanksgiving Eve until well into mid-January...same r... [More]

I don't even have a christmas tree. LOL. Haven't for years really, unless my daughter decided to put one up. Which was rare because it always ended up in a battle regarding when it was going to come down. LOL. I made the ornaments on the previous page. I do sell them... for anywhere from $65-200 each (materials cost being a big determining factor) That's quite a bit of money for a lot of folks. But, it keeps me going from month to month. without people buying my wares (ornaments, jewlery, accessories) I'd be hungry this winter so frankly I'm GLAD people want to buy holiday gear... it keeps peo... http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20101222/BASU/12220332/-1/AMES/Basu-Yes-Virginia-there-s-a-Santa-right-here-in-Iowa I bet you won't find this man shopping for hundred-thousand dollar Christmas ornaments. This is the kind of story that most of us find slightly more heart-warming during this season of giving. I hope each of you reading it find as much joy in it as I did.
