For the first time bionic eye implants will become available to patients on a permanent basis.
The revolutionary microchip can be implanted in to the eye to help blind people see, up until now it has only been available on a short-term basis but thanks to the development of a new safer coating it will soon be possible to use it indefinately.
The chip was taken out after three months but medics at King's College in London plan to implant them for life, after scientists developed a new coating which is safer for permanent use. The hospital will begin testing the tiny microchip in March and is one of two British centres now recruiting people to trial the device hailed as 'quite astonishing' by experts.
