A recent solar flare from the Sun has triggered one of the largest space weather storms in years.
Billions of tons of charged particles have been thrown towards the Earth with the potential for communication and navigation disruptions for airlines, astronauts and power grids. "Human dependence on technology makes society more susceptible to the effects of space weather," says Professor Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado.
An internationally known space weather expert has said that a powerful solar flare that has triggered one of the largest space weather storms in at least four years has disrupted some ground communications on Earth.
