Testing a robot designed to hit people

A European lab is home to an experiment in which a robot has been designed to hit people.
Far from being a thing of violence however the robot is learning where a human's pain threshold is so that it can figure out when to stop.
Somewhere in a laboratory in central Europe, six men are getting beaten up by a robot. Our utopian future existence wasn't supposed to be like this.

I hope they hook up an Arnold soundboard every once and a while. Oh wait, this is a kinder and gentler terminator...

Am I the only one that doesn't see the purpose? Why and who would buy a robot that hits people? I rather do it myself (Irony)

But the intent of the article (just in case someone else didn't read it, I'm no implying that you didn't. ) is that any robotic application in close relation to humans needs to understand what can and can't hurt human beings. This science is pretty critical to ensure that human beings aren't injured when in close proximity to robotic implementations. My above joke post about the Arnold Soundboard aside, I think this... "Of course, there's good intent behind the mechanised violence..." Double-plus good! Yet another triumph of human ingenuity heralded by the Minister of Love.

Unfortunately everyone has a different level of pain tolerance. I can see the benefit to this sort of research, but in the end, it will be up to the robot just like everyone else, to fine tune itself once the upper safety levels have been marked. After all, sure, the robot can learn just how hard it has to hit to break bones, but people complain far below that level of force. I can see the lawsuits from the beginning stages of robotic entry to the office place now.
