A Pentagon-funded research team has created a device that allows robots to think for themselves.
True artificial intelligence is perhaps still a long way off, but finding ways to make robots think and act autonomously without requiring pre-programmed responses and actions has been a goal of roboticists for years. Now a team lead by Professor James K. Gimzewski believes they may have the answer - a technology known as "physical intelligence" that could be the key to making truly autonomous machines.
The device consists of nano-scale interconnected wires capable of performing billions of connections and remembering information like a human brain. Unlike conventional robots, a machine equipped with this mechanism would be capable of operating without the need for instructions from human operators.
The next frontier for the robotics industry is to build machines that think like humans. Scientists have pursued that elusive goal for decades, and they believe they are now just inches away from the finish line.
