A woman who had been filming the eruption also recorded an object that had appeared in the sky nearby.
The Calbuco volcano in Chile erupted unexpectedly on Wednesday evening for the first time in 42 years, pumping out vast quantities of volcanic ash over a sparsely-populated region of the country.
As evacuations commenced however one woman who had been attempting to capture footage of the spectacle also managed to pick up something unexpected hovering in the sky within the vicinity of the ash cloud - an unidentified aircraft with two flashing lights which then seemed to vanish in a split second without explanation.
The video has since made its way on to YouTube and has so far racked up over 315,000 views.
Some Internet users have speculated that the object could have been a helicopter or drone attempting to film the eruption however its sudden disappearance still remains a bit of a mystery.
The original footage of the object near the erupting volcano can be viewed below.
"Liek zomg look how level headed and rational i am this couldn't possibly aliens"-The majority of comment here As opposed to being completely unscientific and illogical and good-old-fashioned-crazy and jumping right to the conclusion that it must be aliens? Yeah, I'm glad I'm on the level-headed side of things.
"Liek zomg look how level headed and rational i am this couldn't possibly aliens"-The majority of comment here I guess my question is why would you think it was aliens? There are at least 4 plausible explanations put forward here that don't require an overactive imagination. For myself, it just looks like a plane flying toward the viewer. I've seen this many times in the desert. It can look like the plane is hovering when in fact it's many miles away flying toward you. The plane's lights are very bright giving the illusion that it's closer than it is.
