A 23-year-old from North Tyneside is addicted to eating sponges dipped in apple washing-up liquid.
Emma Thomspon, who first developed the peculiar habit when she was just three years old, is now so hopelessly addicted to eating sponges that she munches through 20 of them every day.

Describing the behavior as a "guilty pleasure", Miss Thompson even took the habit one step further by dipping the sponges in apple-scented Fairy Liquid to enhance their bland flavor.

The medical explanation for her peculiar habit is a condition known as pica which sees sufferers crave inedible foodstuffs such as dirt, chalk, paper and other similarly unappetizing things.

"Some people have a cigarette, I just have a sponge," she says. "Some people go out for a steak, I would rather go out for a sponge. I like the smell and taste of the washing-up liquid on the sponge."

"As soon as someone mentions a sponge or I am washing the dishes or see a packet of sponges in the shop I need to have one."

It might not be so bad if these were, say, sea sponges topped-off with some delicate, tasty sauce. But synthetic sponges? Waiter. Next menu please.

Wonder if she farts bubbles, she'd be saving money on bubble bath if nothing else. She must ingest some of the sponge and washing up liquid, her guts must be pristine.

Yet another program driven by sensationalising human activity by gathering material from the far end of the spectrum. We all have habits with minor ones like nail biting, sucking fingers and so on in most cases being dropped in infancy or shortly there after. I suppose it fills a niche if you are so inclined.
