Woman 'spontaneously combusts' in park

Medics were called when the woman mysteriously caught fire without any apparent cause or explanation.
The bizarre incident took place in a park in Germany where the woman, who had been sitting on a bench minding her own business, reportedly burst in to flames without any warning.

Shocked passers-by called the emergency services while one brave man attempted to smother out the flames using his own jacket but it was too little, too late - the woman was already badly burned.

When medics arrived she was loaded on to a helicopter and rushed to a hospital in the city of Lubeck however her injuries were severe and she continues to remain in a critical condition.
Investigators have since been attempting to determine exactly what happened and haven't ruled out the possibility that the woman may have set herself on fire in a bid to commit suicide.

The actual phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion (SHC), which has been studied extensively over the centuries, typically sees a victim burst in to flames and burn to death without any apparent means of ignition and without damaging anything else in the vicinity of the fire.

Whether that's what actually happened to the woman in this case however remains unclear.

Perhaps not, I wouldn't know. But humans can increase their body temperature by a whopping 8 degrees celsius by meditation-like practices, "internal alchemy" I guess. But that's what the masters can do, regular people who train at it can do an increase of 2 degrees or so usually. And neither is nearly enough to reach the fat inflammation level. My best wager, if it wasn't external, is some neural circuit or electric current generated by the human being going haywire. Electricity going haywire = sparks and resistance = heat. You sure about that? Meditation can do some pretty interesting things ... [More]

The first time I read about such thing as spontaneous combustion was on the Internet around 2000. I live in Russia and since then I was wondering - why I have never heard of such thing before? I remember how the whole absurdity of this phenomena made me laugh so hard, as it reached so much further into the area of blatant absurd than any other paranormal stuff I heard about. Why do people never ever spontaneously fire up here in my country? We drink much, so logically we should, but no, not even in summer (and the summers are hot here). And not a single person here even heard of such a thing, ... [More]

I might suggest that some of these spontaneous combustion incidents may the result of extreme metabolic states. For example, ketoacidosis, a diabetic state, causes the release of ketones of which the highly flammable acetone is the simplest. Dieting and alcoholic states can also yield acetone. Add a static spark or flame and there is combustion. Same as the alcoholism theory. Acetone and ketones burns easy as anything, but by the time the body's generated anywhere near the amount needed to ignite and sustain combustion against the body's water content, the individual will have been dead a coup... I thought everyone in here knew about the Wick effect? The girl in this article did not spontaneously combust. She cauht fire because her vinyl jacket had been in contact with flamable liquid. She was badly burned yes. spontaneously combustion leaves almost nothing but a black siluet of the body. Now they found out whats behind the "phenomena". And its called the Wick effect. Thank the Gods we learn new things all the time. Good bye dark ages :-) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wick_effect

The "Wick Effect" might explain some SHC cases, but does not explain all SHC cases, like cases where the person is NOT in contact with any flammable liquid or anything else that would be flammable yet still spontaneously combust into flames. Nor does it explain cases where often times ONLY the person had burned, and everything around the person, including couches or beds, unburned. At most, there was scorch marks on the couch or bed, but nothing beyond that. Instead of that handwave, can you refer specifically to the best (and best evidenced) case, in your opinion?
