Mars One applicants now whittled down to 100

The final 100 candidates for the controversial Mars One mission are set to undergo more rigorous tests.
The controversial private spaceflight project, which aims to set up a colony on Mars within the next decade, continues to remain something of an enigma in the field of space exploration.

Over 200,000 people from 140 countries originally signed up for the endeavour in the hope of becoming one of the first humans ever to set foot on Mars and now following a lengthy testing process this list has been reduced to just 100.

The next step will be to whittle the remaining candidates down to just 40 of which only 24 will ultimately be picked for the actual mission.
"Over the course of five days, candidates will face various challenges," the organization said in a statement. "It will be the first time all candidates will meet in person and demonstrate their capabilities as a team."

Whether any of the remaining candidates will ever actually get to go to Mars however remains a point of ongoing contention given how little information there is about how this will be achieved.

Unlike the Apollo moon landings for instance Mars One will be sending its astronauts on a one-way trip with no possible chance of returning. Their survival therefore will instead rely entirely on having a habitable base already set up on Mars for them to live in for the rest of their lives.

Given that to date nobody has even succeeded in building a base on the moon, the Mars One project is simply far too ambitious to be even remotely feasible within such a limited time frame.

In the early 60s NASA estimated of the costs of the Apollo/Moon project at about $20 billion and there wasnt a money problem with that project in general. In total, the Apollo missions were at roughly 200B USD of todays value. MarsOne estimated the costs for the first manned Mars landing at around 6B USD. Of course, the NASA and MarsOne figures are not 100% comparable but 6B will not be enough also viewed under consideration that a few unmanned support missions must be excuted b4 the first manned flight. And, as per MarsOne HP, the total amount of revenues is at lousy 0,9M USD as per April 201... [More]

That is a least important thing. On the other hand, if viewers will bring $ for future space/Mars endeavors, who cares.

Not necesserely a suicide mission (though the risk is obvious, in ~7 months of space travelling many things can go wrong) but there's no coming back. If successful, they're going to set up a human colony on Mars and will have communication with the Earth and resupplies sent to them.

I prefer NASA at this point in time. Not too much into this "Mars One" mission. I think corporations such as Virgin and some of the airline companies are advancing the civilian space agenda correctly. "Mars One" looks like a project funded with wealthy tycoon money and the details of the project don't reflect my own personal views on how such a mission should be approached. That said, I wish the best of journeys to it's crew and it's mission. Traveling to another planet isn't a thing I would ever want to do myself. I'm not much of a crucible type person.

"Day three in the big brother habitat dome and [insert name] the minor celebrity has depressurised the entire habitat dome after [insert another name] sleeps with his best mate dave." Just seems Like a more elaborote and expensive way to gawp at individuals with some kind of personality disorder. A contemporary off-world colloseum.

The more I read about Mars One the more I see it is something of a scam. I reckon the objective is to run a reality TV show of the "colonists" doing a practice mission here on Earth. They will be isolated in a desert in the US or somewhere and live as though they are on Mars, i.e. inside habitation modules and when they go outside they will wear space suits. The hook will be to see how the colonists cope before the "real" mission to Mars. Of course, there will be no real mission to Mars.

It's flat and there are mole people living underneath the crust. Also, ancient aliens. Sinister-Bad-Wolf alone holds the darkest secrets of humanity and he travels the internet sowing seeds of knowledge and enlightenment. Consider yourself blessed to have him impart this precious gem of truth upon you.
