Giant squid washes up on beach in South Africa

Despite its large size, the giant squid is a species that has long remained highly elusive.

A solitary animal that lives deep down in the depths of the ocean where it is rarely encountered, these gigantic sea creatures eke out an existence that scientists know very little about.

Finding one washed up on the shoreline, therefore, is typically the best way to see one up close.This latest example was found in South Africa recently by Ali Paulas whose photograph of the creature has since gone viral on social media and has been picked up by numerous news outlets.

"It was incredible to see," she told Live Science. "The body was around 2.2 meters alone, then with the tentacles and arms I'm sure it would have stretched to 3.5 meters."

Even so, this squid is by no means the largest - some giant squid can grow up to 10 meters in length.
