President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sparked puzzlement and intrigue when he posted the image up on Twitter.
In a bizarre Tweet published on February 25th, Lepez Obrador - who is certainly no stranger to eccentricity - posted up what he seemingly believed was genuine evidence of a mythical creature.
His post included two images - one of a strange creature in a tree that he claimed had been captured on camera by an engineer three days earlier and a second of a Mayan sculpture.
The creature, he claimed, was an 'aluxe' - a type of mischievous elf of Mayan folklore.
"I share two photos of our supervision of the Mayan Train works: one, taken by an engineer three days ago, apparently from an aluxe; another, by Diego Prieto of a splendid pre-Hispanic sculpture in Ek Balam," he wrote. "Everything is mystical."
It wasn't long before other social media users pointed out that the image of the alleged creature had previously appeared online two years ago and was not thought to be genuine.
Exactly why Lepez Obrador had made the decision to post it up on Twitter remains unclear.
"Even by AMLO standards, I think it was received as one of his most bizarre sort of interventions," said Prof Pablo Calderon Martenez of Northeastern University London.
