Authorities ordered local residents to remain indoors as efforts were made to capture the beast.
While there have been questionable rumors of large exotic cats roaming wild in countries in which they don't belong for decades now, there was little doubt about the veracity of reports concerning a fully-grown male lion prowling the streets of Ladispoli, near Rome on Saturday evening.
The enormous beast was filmed wandering nonchalantly down darkened roads in front of parked cars, driveways and gardens as locals remained indoors to avoid attracting its gaze.
Mayor Alessandro Grando put out a general notice for people to avoid going outside as local authorities worked to sedate and apprehend the creature.
According to reports, the lion had somehow managed to escape from a local circus.
It took five hours, but eventually authorities and circus staff were able to re-capture the animal.
"Now he will be taken in hand by the circus staff," said Grando.
"I hope that this episode can stir some consciences and that we can finally put an end to the exploitation of animals in circuses."
I love the thought of an Italian guy looking out the window in his houscoat and slippers, drinking a beer and a lion strolls by. A rub of the eyes, Mutterings in Italian , the beer down the sink and an early bed. The wife Scolding him all the way.
