The new artificial intelligence system uses data about people's lives to determine how long they have left to live.
A step above the type of predictive algorithm used by health insurance companies, the new AI model, which was developed by researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), was programmed using real data about the lives of 6 million Danish citizens.
To determine how long someone might live, it looked for patterns in the data concerning everything from their education, occupation and income to any underlying health conditions they might have.
To test its accuracy, the scientists used data from a set group of people of whom 50% had passed away and then asked the artificial intelligence to determine who lived and who died.
Spookily, its predictions were 11% more accurate than any other existing system.
"We used the model to address the fundamental question: to what extent can we predict events in your future based on conditions and events in your past?" said study first author Sune Lehman.
"Scientifically, what is exciting for us is not so much the prediction itself, but the aspects of data that enable the model to provide such precise answers."
The question is - would you really want an AI to tell you when it thinks you are going to die ?
"Our framework allows researchers to identify new potential mechanisms that impact life outcomes and associated possibilities for personalized interventions," the researchers wrote.
