The grisly and unnerving discovery left local authorities scratching their heads.
New York City's subway system has seen more than its typical share of incidents in recent weeks.
These have included the case of a man who was struck on the head by a metal water bottle, the discovery of a body on one of the subway cars and a fatal shooting at a Bronx subway stop.
Now, according to reports, a worker who had been clearing away snow discovered a disembodied human leg in the subway track bed on the line between 167th and 170th streets in the Bronx.
An initial examination failed to determine if the limb belonged to a man or a woman and it remains unclear exactly what state it is in or how long it had been lying there before being found.
Most perplexing is the question of who the leg belonged to and how it ended up there - no other human remains have been found and there were no reports of anyone being hit by a train.
The city's medical examiner has since taken possession of the leg in an attempt to learn more about its owner.
"Upon arrival, officers observed a human leg along the roadbed," a police spokesperson said.
"The leg was removed and the investigation remains ongoing."
Update:Reports have since indicated that the leg likely belonged to someone who was hit by a train many days before and many miles away from where the limb was actually found.
There are early indications that the victim may have ended up on the tracks at Spring Street station in lower Manhattan either after accidentally falling from the platform or by jumping on to the tracks deliberately.
