The young French woman was found dead at an abandoned church in northern Italy's Aosta Valley a few days ago.
In a strange and disturbing case that has perplexed local authorities, the 22-year-old was found dead with most of the blood drained from her body after being stabbed with a camping knife.
Three gunshot wounds were also seemingly inflicted on her body after she had died and someone had, for reasons unknown, scraped some of her blood up off the floor and taken it with them.
The case could potentially be connected to the mysterious disappearances of two other people in the same area.
The church in which the woman was found (thought to be Chatelard Castle) is abandoned and has gained something of a reputation for being haunted. Police believe that she may have been there as part of a social media ghost-hunting challenge that is currently popular in France.
Witnesses reportedly saw both her and a male friend dressed as vampires in the general area before her death and noted that she had looked "pale" and "emaciated" like a "walking corpse".
Police are also investigating the possibility that she had become involved in some form of ritualistic sacrifice or "consented murder" or that her presence at the church was part of a social media prank.
Detectives are focusing their efforts on finding the male friend who was seen with the woman as well as the owner of a burgundy van that was spotted on CCTV near the church the previous week.
No further details of the investigation have been made public so far.
