A neurotechnology firm claims to have achieved the first ever instance of dream-based communication.
According to reports, California-based startup REMSpace - which has been developing technology to enhance or induce lucid dreaming - has, for the first time ever, achieved two-way communication between two sleeping individuals through the medium of dreams.
While the specific details of the equipment used have not been revealed, the experiment reportedly saw the two participants communicate from separate homes while hooked up to a purpose-built apparatus that included computer servers, wi-fi and some sort of unspecified sensing equipment.
"Yesterday, communicating in dreams seemed like science fiction," said CEO Michael Raduga.
"Tomorrow, it will be so common we won't be able to imagine our lives without this technology. "
"This opens the door to countless commercial applications, reshaping how we think about communication and interaction in the dream world."
As things stand, the results of the experiment have yet to be independently verified, but if true the ability to communicate over distances in dreams would certainly be revolutionary.
The firm's research centers on lucid dreaming, which is a form of dreaming where the experiencer is able to control what's happening, almost like participating in an interactive movie.
Being able to induce this on demand is a major part of what REMSpace is trying to achieve.
