A 17-year-old boy from the Netherlands is at the center of a bizarre medical mystery that nobody can explain.
According to reports, the boy - who had been having knee surgery after suffering an injury while playing soccer - woke up from the procedure only for his family to discover that he could no longer speak his native language and was instead only able to speak English.

The bizarre situation was made all the stranger by the fact that he had previously only spoken English during classes at school and was now adamant that he was actually located in the United States.

He was unable to recognize his own parents and didn't seem to understand a word of Dutch.

While medical staff initially dismissed his symptoms as a form of post-surgery delirium, they ended up requesting a psychiatric consultation when he was still unable to speak Dutch hours later.

When a neurologist examined him, no sign of any other abnormalities was found.
Eventually, around 18 hours after the surgery, the boy started to speak his own language again and before long seemed to have mostly returned to normal.

Doctors believe that he was suffering from a very rare case of foreign language syndrome - a malady that sees a patient wake up only to find themselves speaking a different language.

The condition is so rare, in fact, that there are only 9 documented cases in medical literature and this is thought to be the first to involve an adolescent patient.

Exactly what causes it to happen remains a completely mystery.

Fortunately, in this case, the boy was well enough to go home three days later.

This is indeed a strange phenomenon. I know of some cases where, after accidents, people began to speak foreign languages or remember places they had never been to in their lives and thought they were someone else. It could be an indication that people are right about their reincarnation theories and that he was actually a guy from the U.S. in a previous life. It is also possible that one of his ancestors passed on his memories to him via his genes. Of course, it could be something else entirely. Either way, it's interesting.

I agree with you it is very interesting and your list of possibilities are the same as mine. Thanks for sharing

There has been similar incidents where accidents or surgeries under anaesthesia resulted in the victim/patient started speaking in other languages.  This phenomenon is known as xenoglossy, and sudden reliving of past life memories could be a reason for this, imho. https://thiswonderfulword.com/2014/09/18/xenoglossy/ There is a similar case study of an Australian man who woke up from a coma speaking in fluent chinese without knowledge of english. https://www.vice.com/en/article/meet-the-guy-ben-mcmahon-who-woke-from-a-car-accident-coma-speaking-chinese-language/   There is a parallel case s... I suspect that he meticulously listened to the English spoken during the many NBA games his parents watched on their television.

That thought has been tossed around by many people, it would also vindicate those who believe in reincarnation.

What many seem to miss is this: "He was able to answer questions, albeit in English spoken with a Dutch accent." If he was a 'reincarnated American', why would he speak with a Dutch accent? There's something entirely else going on here.

Maybe in his previous life he immigrated to America from Holland, that would account for speaking English with a Dutch accent!
