A recent study has reportedly discovered evidence of structures stretching thousands of feet beneath the desert sands.
The discovery, which was made by researchers from Scotland's University of Strathclyde and Italy's University of Pisa, involved using radar pulses to create high-resolution images of what lies beneath Egypt's Pyramids of Giza.
Describing their find as "groundbreaking", the team reportedly discovered eight vertical cylindrical structures extending 2,100 feet beneath the ground and even more unidentified structures descending a further 4,000 feet below that.
If it turned out that there really was such a vast complex below the pyramids, it would surely be one of the most important archaeological discoveries in history.
That said, however, other researchers have been quick to cast doubt on the significance of the find.
Radar expert Professor Lawrence Conyers of the University of Denver, for example, has expressed reservations on the basis that radar pulse technology cannot penetrate so deep into the ground.
He described the claims of a "vast city" to be "a huge exaggeration", but maintained that it is possible that there could easily be small undiscovered chambers and caverns beneath the pyramids.
The only way to know for sure, he added, was to excavate the site.
"My take is that as long as authors are not making things up and that their basic methods are correct, their interpretations should be given a look by all who care about the site," he told
Mail Online.
"We can quibble about interpretations, and that is called science."
"But the basic methods need to be solid."
Right now it is still early days for the research team and their findings have still to be peer-reviewed.
We'll certainly be keeping an eye on this one as more is revealed over the coming months.
