Many people are terrified of what might happen if they use one of these boards, but why exactly is this ?
A staple of horror movies, paranormal investigations and mediumship sessions, the Ouija board is typically operated by having participants place a finger on a planchette which then moves between the printed letters and words to spell out a message from beyond the grave.

While many dismiss them as supernatural claptrap, others remain convinced that they are the real deal - even warning people against their use in fear of summoning something 'unnatural'.

For some, such fears are so genuine that they dare not touch or even set eyes upon one.

To explore this further, researchers decided to run an experiment in which 84 volunteers - some skeptics and some staunch believers in the paranormal - were asked to use a Ouija board.

To make the situation as convincing as possible, the sessions were undertaken at night outside an abandoned hotel that had previously been used as a hospital during the Spanish Civil War.
The participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire both before and after the session.

The findings indicated that those who already believed in the paranormal experienced high levels of anxiety, altered states of consciousness and the perception of supernatural occurrences.

The skeptic group, meanwhile, experienced none of these things.

The researchers concluded that it was the belief itself, as oppose to supernatural activity, that produced the fear as those who did not believe in the paranormal were not similarly impacted.

They also noted that the experiment showed that the board itself was totally harmless.

You seem to not realize is that on here we are typically dealing with the preacher types. Those who ego is hyped up on spiritual bath salts. My only issue with you is this almost constant need for the "end of times", as a Christian wouldn't it be a better idea to encourage more peace? If there is a god, what it does is no one's business. Also, if faith brings you peace, what do i care. Some need it and some don't. For the record I absolutely hate Islam as a religion and a culture.

They also represent our deeper fears.  Demons, Hell, Satan, The Devil...all manifestations of our own fears...perpetuated by religion.

I don't really see much difference between the Abrahamic religions. The Jews hate the Muslims, Muslims hate the Jews, and the Christians give them enough  bombs to send everybody to hell. God of love and peace, right. I would disagree either of these religions do no harm. You bend history to fit your little black book and there lies the problem.

And apparently, you have trouble reading and comprehending my words.  I speak of MYSELF only.  Most of the people I know who call themselves by Christ's name are just as failed and flawed as any other human being.  I CERTAINLY never claimed to be perfect or without faults and failures.  Your beef is with organized religion.  Mine is mainly with myself.  Sometimes I find that I loathe my own behavior and despite trying to be better, I stumble over and over. I think the problem with those who have rejected Christ, is that they expect, even demand, that everyone who has any faith in His wor... [More]

I had a similar experience as a teenager.  It was disturbing enough that I would never try it again.

Well, there are two options: 1) it doesn;t work, if so why even bother with it? 2) It works - than it should be treated with great caution.

So once again, like with most paranormal phenomena, the only thing being summoned is your own imagination. When belief is the driving force, it turns the experience into something far more psychological than supernatural. In this case, its interesting how the fear isnt actually about the board or any supernatural force... its entirely driven by belief.  The study makes it clear - those who already believe in the paranormal experience heightened anxiety and altered perceptions, While skeptics participate without letting belief influence their experience.  Its a classic case of expectation ... Another relic of Victorian era Spiritualism, right up there with physical mediums, ectoplasm, table rapping, and seances. The notion that using a piece of wood gives one the ability to summon and communicate with the dead, and to be scared of on top of it because of “evil spirits and demons” coming through a portal you can create by doing so is nothing less than rampant medieval superstition. Not to mention downright gullibility and stupidity. I’m sorry, there’s just no other way to put it. It astounds me so many people can believe such absurd garbage in this day and age. And that’s ...   I don't believe in the paranormal at all, but I can still see the potential for these types of things to mess with people's heads (obviously more so for believers). Sometimes in ways they mightn't understand, as most of what swirls around in our mind is likely to be beyond what we are conscious of anyway.
