Eagle-eyed investigators have identified a peculiar reference to something that may be hidden under the iconic statue.
Back in the 1930s, American clairvoyant Edgar Cayce claimed to have knowledge of a secretive chamber buried deep beneath the Giza Plateau - a 'Hall of Records' containing scrolls, maps and artifacts relating to ancient knowledge and a long-lost civilisation.
Theories concerning this hidden vault have been debated for decades, though to date no definitive evidence of such a room has ever been found.
Now, though, a tantalizing new clue has been discovered buried deep in the CIA's files.
Hidden within a 10-page document from 1952 entitled "Presentation Form for Graphic Material", there exists an obscure reference to what the CIA described as a "Temple under the Sphinx".
So could this mean that the enigmatic Hall of Records was found decades ago ?
Today, most Egyptologists remain highly skeptical that such a chamber actually exists.
"The Sphinx has been thoroughly excavated," said archaeologist Zahi Hawass.
"My friend and colleague, Mark Lehner, and I investigated it ourselves in 1979. Nothing like a Hall of Records has been found in or near the Sphinx."
Some researchers have discovered what are thought to be hidden voids beneath the Giza Plateau in recent years, though these remain highly contentious and open to interpretation.
As things stand, it is certainly not impossible that something could still be hidden down there.
Whether or not we will ever know for sure, however, is another matter entirely.
