The research hoped to learn more about the persistence of consciousness in patients who were brought back from the brink.
The question of what happens to us after we die remains one of the most fundamental and seemingly unanswerable enigmas of the human condition.
This, however, hasn't stopped scientists from trying to learn what they can about it.
In a recent study, researchers conducted an experiment involving 140 volunteers from hospitals in the UK and Spain who were at risk of going into cardiac arrest.
Music or bird song was then played during the first two minutes of efforts to resuscitate them.
Those who recovered then completed a memory test about their experience.
The researchers discovered that those who had been played music or bird song while they were technically deceased were able to recall those sounds at an accuracy rate above mere guesswork.
The findings indicated that consciousness was preserved even beyond clinical death.
That said, it is obvious that only those who survived were able to recall what they experienced, meaning that their consciousness must have persisted for them to be talking about it.
The real question is - for how long did those who did not survive hear the music ?
