A species of insect thought to be extinct has been found on a sea stack in the middle of the ocean.
The 'tree lobster' is a large flightless stick insect that was thought to have died out years ago until a small colony of them was discovered on Ball's Pyramid, a huge isolated sea stack that at 1,844ft is the tallest in the world. Despite these isolated and harsh conditions the insects have managed to cling on to existence around a single plant that survives on the rock. "It felt like stepping back into the Jurassic age, when insects ruled the world," said scientist Nicholas Carlile who journeyed there with David Priddel.
A narrow and forbidding rock that stands higher than the Empire State Building, it does not look like the most welcoming place to set up home. But that did not stop an insect which was thought to be extinct for 80 years from building its last known colony on the 1,844ft high Ball’s Pyramid.
