A new find showing that the equator was once covered in ice is being hailed as proof of a snowball Earth.
The theory is based on the idea that Earth was once covered in a planetwide ice age, natural global warming through volcanism would have helped to thaw the ice. The new discovery demonstrates that in support of this idea the equator was once covered in ice as well.
Earth's now steamy Equator was covered with ice 716 million years ago, according to a new study. The finding appears to add solid evidence to the theory of an ancient "snowball Earth." The discovery hinged on proving that the right rocks had been covered by glaciers in the right place at the right time.
