Former astronauts who set foot on the Moon have expressed their disappointment in the recent Moon program cancellations.
Jim Lovell who commanded Apollo 13 stated that he felt the decision would have catastrophic consequences for America's space program. With China looking to be the forerunner in a return to the lunar surface it looks like Nasa may be out of the race to return to the moon for the forseeable future.
Former Nasa astronauts who went to the Moon have told the BBC of their dismay at President Barack Obama's decision to push back further Moon missions. Jim Lovell, commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, said Mr Obama's decision would have "catastrophic consequences" for US space exploration.

The private sector has never flown in space. The private sector has no experience in managing manned spaceflight. There's certainly enough money floating around to do it, so long as investors can see some sign of tangible return. But there's no experience there whatsoever. MID, I agree with virtually every thing you say on this subject except this. It is not a valid argument to point out the lack of experience in the private sector. Remember the total manned spaceflight experience of the USA when Kennedy committed your nation to going to the moon was just 15 minutes. Even the longest journey s... [More]

Obama is a top notch grade - A - **** hole. The space program and the manned missions side of things is one of the truly great things to come out of America that benefits mankind. I dont want to see the Tiddly Winks as the world leaders in space. but that is exactly what is going to happen if Obama keeps knocking things back. how much is the NASA budget, including possible manned missions to the moon?

Remember the total manned spaceflight experience of the USA when Kennedy committed your nation to going to the moon was just 15 minutes. Even the longest journey starts with a single step True Waspie. I think I should rephrase it to say this: The private sector has no experience in manned space flight. Despite the fact that I have few doubts they could do the job, if you look at history, it'll take them decades...provided they have e... [More]

i would be the first to encourage space flight by private companies. however, their first concern would be making money, not exploration. cancelling our planned moon missions is also a death sentence for our hopes to reach mars. the whole idea of going to the moon first was to act as a stepping stone per-say towards going to the red planet. we still have a lot of technological and logistics details that need to be addressed before we travel there. with missions to the moon we could work out most of the details before we go flinging people towards other planets. this decision by Obama is a kill... wasting billions without any return benefit is stupid . That is 100% true. Obama's administration is doing that daily, save for the fact that the number is in the trillions rather than billions, and has the potential, if permitted to continue, of having your grandchildren and great grand children footing the bill for it. I think that's incredibly stupid. However, if NASA was wasting money, I'd agree with your implication too. But they aren't, and never have. NASA represents an average 7:1 return on the Federal dollar, which is the best return of any Federal expenditure there's ever been. If yo... [More]

I dont want to see the Tiddly Winks as the world leaders in space. but that is exactly what is going to happen if Obama keeps knocking things back. I think your opinion of Obama has been made rather clear, steve! how much is the NASA budget, including possible manned missions to the moon? The current proposal is around 18 billion for 2011, and that doesn't include anything for manned missions to the Moon. Prior propo... [More]

i for one am quite p***ed about the cancellation. can we start a petition to obama or something? I don't think it will help right now. Obama has enough trouble to deal with without thinking about NASA. His healthcare plan has people demonstrating outside of Democratic congressional and Senate offices around the country, making lots of noise that will drown out pleas for NASA for the moment. I think this plan's going to have to wait until after the Congressional elections of 2010 to have a chance of being considered again...
