Long lost Soviet robot found on Moon

NASA have discovered the whereabouts of the long lost Lunokhod 1 that landed on the moon 40 years ago.
The Soviet robot landed on the lunar surface in 1970 aboard Luna 17 and spent 11 months travelling almost 7 miles across the moon. Surprisingly the robot's laser retroreflector was still able to pick up and return signals back to the Earth with startling clarity.
A Soviet robot lost on the dusty plains of the Moon for the past 40 years has been found again, and it is returning surprisingly strong laser pulses to Earth. "We shined a laser on Lunokhod 1's position, and we were stunned by the power of the reflection," says Tom Murphy of UC San Diego, who leads the research team that's putting the old robot back to work. "Lunokhod 1 is talking to us loudly and clearly. "

That's a bit of luck. They lost one, and found another! Good stuff!

It should be interesting to hear the results of the experiment once all the data is gathered.

Cool! I wish they'd bring it back and put it in a museum, I'd love to see it.

Isn't Russia taking ownership on that? I believe they're gonna have some council meeting first before they take or even move that long lost robot.

now if nasa could just find the original tapes from the lunar landing... funny how they can find a long lost soviet relic but not their own video recordings.

now if nasa could just find the original tapes from the lunar landing... funny how they can find a long lost soviet relic but not their own video recordings. Not going to happen. It's well understood that the original slow scan tapes of the AS-11 lunar landing were erased. No one's looking for them, as they don't exist anymore.
