Mark Riccobono has become the first blind man in the US to legally drive a car around a racetrack.
The feat was made possible by a special SUV fitted with sensors that sends vibrating signals to his hands and seat telling him when to turn, speed up and slow down. The project is the product of years of research by the National Federation for the Blind in a bid to create a car that blind people can use to drive on the roads.
A blind man has become the first person in America to legally drive a car around a race track in a test which could one day lead to all visually impaired people taking to the roads.

WTF! This is ridiculusly dangerous if ever permitted on public roads. I'm not worried. I seriously doubt the Dept. of Transportation would ever allow it.

The last thing we need is a bunch of self-empowered blind people in needless, unsafe systems driving on public roads. That's horrifying. I feel for them, I really do, but good God, we don't need them driving....it's just something they'll never do, and the ones wanting to should accept that.

Like MacGyver, you can communicate with your car, lol. It's interesting and all look and sound so exciting but they really shouldn't encourage this, any blind people shouldn't drive. It's for their own safety.

I'm hugely uncomfortable will a blind person driving an SUV going 65 mph around other drivers, especially if the other drivers have children in their cars. You and me both!

This whole thing is idiotic and possibly suicidal. There are so many factors involved with driving that you need vision for, I doubt that the car can compensate for all of them.

Yeah this seems very dangerous to me as I care about other people too. "His SUV was fitted with laser sensors that passed data to his hands and sent vibrating signals telling him how much to turn. The cushion on his seat was also wired into the same system and vibrated telling him to brake or accelerate." Now what if any of there equipments fail? as far as my personal experience goes, technology is not 100% reliable , there are always some problems or glitches that are learnt afterwards when something goes wrong and in most cases accidents. We have history to prove this. Its much of a risk tha... [More]
