Australian man creates first prototype of a hoverbike which he hopes to bring into production soon.
No matter what kind of vehicle you drive, sitting in traffic at any point in the day is never fun, but imagine if you could glide over all of the sorry suckers who are stuck in their cars or trucks, pounding their steering wheels in frustration. One Australian man hopes to make a futuristic vehicle the newest mode of transportation to alleviate traffic congestion.
Adventurous motorcyclists might be familiar with the thrill of getting airborne at the top of a rise, but the Hoverbike is set to take catching some air to a whole new level. With a 1170 cc 4-stroke engine delivering 80 kW driving two ducted propellers, the inventor of the Hoverbike, Chris Malloy, says with its high thrust to weight ratio, the Hoverbike should be able to reach an estimated height of more than 10,000 feet.

Good flying Miss Thong. At 10000ft you will need more than a thong. Heated overall flying suite for temps bellow freesing. Oxgen for this altitude, and an up to date airways chart.Just for starters.Dream on Most healthy people don't need oxygen at 10,000'. Supplemental oxygen is only required in unpressurized airplanes above 10,000'. So the hoverbike is good to go

ok 27vet,10000 is a dodgy hight without oxygen, anyway you would not want this altitude to dodge traffic.I remember several designers thought the way to dodge traffic was a car that converted into an aircraft. Me I prefer a motorised hot air ballon. Can you see them motoring round New York high rise buildings and landing on roofs.

I love motorcycles, I love flying...but that just looks deathtrap'ish. I can't imagine that there are any safety backup systems that will keep the vehicle stable if there is a hiccup with the engine. At least with a helicopter there is enough control surfaces to be able to pull an "autorotation" if the engine craps out. It doesn't seem that would be an option with the two small blades here. Don't get me wrong, I want me a flying car more than the average bear, but this doesn't seem like a good idea. Been tried by the Army in the 50s and disregarded, too expensive, to noisy to prone to mechanic... [More]

It'd be cool but just as much, if not more of a PIA as my Harley during bad weather. Gotta have an enclosed one! And at 10k feet I'm thinkin a heater might be nice, too.

It looks really neat. But just looking at it I see some huge stability problems. If he ever gets that figured out and finds a good answer to the safety issues; sign me up. I live in S.TX and have lots and lots of miles of scrub country to cross to do even the most mundane of errands. This little gizmo would certainly make the trip more interesting. And I could look for that Bigfoot I saw a few years ago.
