New research suggests "doh" may have been one of the first words spoken by our ancient ancestors.
At first, the shape and mechanics of the mouth and throat would have only permitted a very limited vocabulary, but simple words like "doh" and "duh" would have been possible. It is difficult to determine exactly how language developed because the mouth and tongue, being soft tissues, are not preserved and thus cannot be studied directly in the remains of early humans.
It is the very modern catchphrase of Homer Simpson. But ‘D’oh’ – or a version of it – may have prehistoric origins. Research suggests that ‘Duh’ would have been one of the first words spoken by humans.
