NASA claims 2012 fears are unfounded

NASA maintains that notions of an apocalypse near the end of December 2012 are complete nonsense.

For years speculation has grown thanks to interpretations of the ancient Mayan calendar which ends on the 21st December 2012, leading to the suggestion that the Mayans must have known the world was going to end at that time. "It would be like saying that our calendar ends Dec. 31, and that's the end of time," said NASA astronomer Don Yeomans who downplays the fuss. "The Maya never predicted the end of the world occurred at that time."

The ancient Mayan calendar was, like the modern Gregorian calendar, 365 days long. In addition to the year, the ancient Maya measured time in longer periods, with a short-count and a long-count calendar, just as we measure time in decades, centuries and millennia.

if you didn't assume so much, you'd find you weren't wrong so much. Really, Oly? Kindly post an example of me being wrong, including a full explanation of the 'wrongness'. Or apologise. Getting back on topic, earlier I asked the OP to give a proper translation that supported the claim - perhaps you would like to walk the walk and do that for him. Or is posting youtube links the full extent of your debating methodology?

All a load of cobblers, the Mayan calender never factored in leap years as they came about after there calender was written. So this means their predicted date has already gone.

If ever there was a doomsday collision imminent, would the authorities reveal it? What would that achieve? Rather let mankind be fat dumb and happy and suffer a relatively painless and rapid end.

I would point out that there are thousands of non-gov't astronomers with exceptionally powerful telescopes scanning the skies looking for neo's - just look at the number of comets that are spotted by amateurs. Let alone the fact that every one of the telescope operators/maintainers/ancillary staff would also have to be 'silenced', as would every country's gov't... Seriously, folks, go join your local ...
