Scientists are hoping to serve up an edible test-tube hamburger as early as October of this year.
The production of artificial meat that can be 'grown' in a lab has been hailed as one of the holy grails of future food production, potentially providing unlimited food supply without the need to keep and slaughter livestock. "In October we are going to provide a proof of concept showing out of stem cells we can make a product that looks, feels and hopefully tastes like meat," said Professor Mark Post.
The process of culturing the artificial meat in the lab is so laborious that the finished product, expected to arrive in eight months' time, will cost about £220,000 (EUR250,000).
