The original Jersey Devil legend was written as a parody by Ben Franklin with added insult to his competition, Daniel Leeds. If you use the search function you will find the whole explanation in several threads. As for seeing anything? I have lived in Chatsworth, the center of the Pines my entire life. I worked for the local outfitter, the Pine Barren Stove Company and Sporting Goods most of my late childhood and still hang out there. I have yet to me someone who has saw the devil. Interesting point, however I had two encounters with the supposed "JD". Although I grew up in North jersey, in which both of my sightings occured...Clinton rd and Split rock (i was sober, lol. I am split about this topic, first where my encounters a manifestation of my mind, or real?...My second theory, and probably more believeable, is that the leeds had a mutant child (see harlaquin baby) that was shunned by society and a mythical creature was developed out of that... Putting aside Mother Leeds 13 child for the time being.. I would be interested in your two sightings, would you please elaborate on them? Surely, one of my bizarre hobbies is "wild-crafting", in laymen s terms, picking wild edibles. Anyhow, first experience was at a reservoir in an area that I grew up in called Split rock where I was picking tasty mushrooms, now in this instance I did not see this creature airborne, rather I saw it ducking and hiding behind trees like it was watching me without me noticing, almost kid like playing hide and go seek. Anyway, I am the type of person that is willing to believe if you offer adequate proof , in my mind at least, that something exists. Until then I am a skeptic. I personally have not seen one single shred of evidence that a Jersey Devil exists. At the risk of repeating myself, the thing is more legend, urban or otherwise that real flesh and blood. No, I can't prove it but I knows whoever reads this is real, same thing, I can't prove it but I know you are.

I am a huge skeptic of the JD. I also realize that solid proof is not likely in most if any cryptid or supernatural realms. This is the reason that I stated I would be a skeptic until adequate proof, IN MY MIND, is presented. What is adequate to me may not be adequate to others. Also, the coelecanth should not even be brought into this discussion. Yes, it was thought to be extinct, but it lives in the ocean.
