Computer generated characters almost indistinguishable from real people are currently in development.
Game publisher Activision has shown off some tech demos of real-time character animation that is so convincing that you would be forgiven for thinking that you were looking at video footage of an actual person. The creation of realism in computer-generated people has always been difficult because the closer to realistic the image becomes, the more it tends to suffer from 'uncanny valley', a phenomenon in which the character seems "not quite right".
With Activision's latest tech demo, the Call of Duty publisher has managed to get around this by generating facial animations that are on the other side of "uncanny valley" in that they are realistic enough to appear human to anyone watching them.
A presentation at GDC has given the first glimpse at Activision’s next generation graphics technology, and potentially the next Call Of Duty.
Impressive. With the matrix overlay, it appears they are mapping most of the facial muscles to obtain the desired results. As computers become more powerful, one could imagine that creative producers will be able to extract both voice and visual components from classic actors to create new venues or even create an fully animated versions of classic written works.
Incredible! I agree the mouth doesn't look right when open; looks to black void like. Just imagine al the hoaxes in the future. Political opponents destroyed for being with "ladies of the evening".... see I have video to prove it!
glad activision did something with all that money got from all the idiots who repeatedly bought the same game year after year Why idiots? And why suggest what they've done with their money previously was less than adequate? Edit: It's cool but video games are years away from this. Maybe the ps5 can do it. Ha! We can only hope! The amount of time and money that goes into big games now is staggering. The only way I can see video and computer games being profitable ongoing is (patent pending). Edit 2: For example; is nice to see progression from OutRun (1986) to today's most advanced racers! Is sa... [More]
Computer generated characters almost indistinguishable from real people are currently in development. Omg it's almost life like, there's still a bit of imperfections like you couldn't see the pallet in the mouth and other little things. Besides that, it's almost real. I wanna see them make the next Lara Croft.
The question really is how can this be used enough to pay for it. I'm fairly sure Marylin Monroe and Clark Gable will become boring very quickly and porn actors doing things impossible in real life will become a joke. What else? Virtual reality suggests itself -- you can design your avatar to be very realistic and at the same time pretty much any monster you can dream up. I suppose teenage boys will like that for awhile. I wouldn't mind being Harry Potter on occasion, but I suspect the rights to that one will be costly. In a world where everyone knows anything can be facked, there will not be ... [More]
What will the Academy Awards look like? . once we have ultramegasupermaxihi-def frank, reality itself will look as badly animated as Team America..... :-)
