Missile test launch sparks UFO scare in South Korea

In a compelling reminder of how easily mundane and conventional aerial phenomena can be mistaken for extraterrestrial visitors, South Korea experienced its own miniature UFO scare on Friday when a spate of sightings and reports of something in the sky hit social media.

Puzzled users posted up photographs and videos of rainbow-colored vapor trails, unexplained lights and other strange spectacles in the skies over the city of Goyang and its surrounding area.

Even the police were inundated with calls from residents who were worried about what they had seen.While many were convinced that the phenomenon was evidence of alien visitors, it soon became apparent that the lights and vapor trails had a rather more down-to-earth explanation.

According to the South Korean military, the sightings had actually been sparked by the recent test firing of a solid-fuelled rocket as part of the country's efforts to bolster its surveillance capabilities.

No notification had been given to the public beforehand due to the sensitive nature of the launch.
