A grandfather from Stourbridge, England made the surprising discovery after buying the vegetables from Aldi.
We've heard of people finding small frogs and caterpillars inside bags of salad before, but this is the first time we've heard of someone finding a live snake inside something bought from a supermarket.
63-year-old Neville Linton had purchased the broccoli from a branch of Aldi in the West Midlands and had taken it out of his fridge a few days later when he noticed something inside the bag.
Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a snake.
"It was pretty frightening," he said. "I'm not good with snakes."
"It's lucky I didn't just leave the broccoli out in the kitchen, or it would have been loose in the house. That would have been a huge risk for us because we have two vulnerable people living here."
A local zoo later identified the reptile as a ladder snake - a species native to parts of southern Europe that is not venomous but can still offer a nasty bite.
"We are investigating this isolated incident and have apologized to Mr Linton that our usual high standards were not met," the supermarket said in a statement.
Quote: Following the incident, Mr Linton said he has been offered compensation, but is pushing for more. Prick. He didn't have to buy meat to go with the broccoli.
Snakes occasionally find their way into my house, though they’re non-venomous fox snakes that only strike when they feel threatened. I make a point to turn on the lights and check the floor when I’m walking through my house after dark. Just one of the many exciting things you encounter when living in the country.
