One resident of Apopka, Florida was dismayed to discover that someone had made off with her driveway.
It is not unusual to hear stories of scammers targeting homeowners, but this is the first time we've heard of workmen showing up uninvited outside someone's house and literally stealing their entire driveway.
Not long after putting her house up for sale, Amanda Brochu noticed that someone had turned up outside her property with a tape measure. When she asked why they were there, the contractor told her that a man named Andre had enquired about replacing the concrete outside the house.
The work ultimately didn't go ahead because the contractor had demanded proof of ownership, while Andre - whoever he was - maintained that the whole thing had been a simple misunderstanding.
This would seem to have been the end of it, but then one week later Brochu looked out of her window to find that workmen had arrived in her garden and were digging up her driveway with a digger.
By the time the police arrived, the men had completely removed the entire thing.
Fortunately, once word of the incident hit the local news, Brochu was able to raise enough funds to cover the expense of replacing the drive, but the nature of the theft remained a bit of a mystery.
In particular, it wasn't clear how the conmen had actually benefited from stealing the driveway other than to make life as difficult as possible for her.
According to reports from realtors, such scams are surprisingly not that uncommon.
The difference in mindset between the people is like night and day between the Panhandle and the southern part of the state. The Panhandle is as red as my home state and is heavily populated with the military while the south is more like NYC, with heat and humidity...
