The man's shouts for help ended up being misinterpreted as evidence of something paranormal.
According to reports, the man - 22-year-old Liu Chuanyi from China - had somehow managed to end up at the bottom of an abandoned well on the border between Thailand and Myanmar.

Having suffered several injuries including a fractured wrist and a concussion, he started screaming for help relentlessly but quickly realized that he would need to conserve his energy if he was to have any hope of rescue.

Instead, he tried shouting for help once an hour.
Unfortunately, his cries went unanswered - not because nobody could hear them, but because those who did had become convinced that what they were hearing was some sort of ghost.

This meant that the local people had began deliberately avoiding going anywhere near the well.

Fortunately, though, in the end, someone finally did contact the police to report his calls and rescuers arrived on the scene.

By the time he was rescued, he had gone three days without eating or drinking.

Well that is a sad story.  People go for the supernatural before the physical and get scared off.  At least the guy was lucky enough to make it out alive.

There are a lot of ghosts that moan, scream and cry in that area of the world according to my friend from Laos.  One of the most common types are spirits of women who's children died so they committed suicide.

Not that simple anymore. Today one must be cautious not to come to the aid of a malicious spirit desiring an attachment to unwary good samaritans.

You would think someone would be looking for a man missing for days and looking for clues.

Great example of why we must exhaustively rule out all prosaic explanations before giving even the slightest consideration to paranormal ones. It can literally save lives.
