Mystery surrounds disc-shaped object spotted on Google Earth

Disc on Google Earth
What is this and what is it used for ? Image Credit: Google Earth
A peculiar white, circular object or structure has left eagle-eyed Google Earth sleuths scratching their heads.
The mysterious object, which was spotted in New Mexico, is situated around 34 miles from the Sevilleta National Refuge in the state's remote and mountainous Sierra Ladrones region.

Resembling a white disc partially obscured by ground vegetation, it sits at an altitude of 7,400 feet.

You can find it for yourself on Google Maps at the co-ordinates 34°24'21.6"N 107°05'44.5"W.

When images of the discovery were shared online, social media users quickly began speculating as to precisely what this peculiar feature could actually be.

Some suggested that it could be a crashed UFO, while others thought it might be a hatch to some secretive underground complex.
Others, meanwhile, tried to turn back the clock by looking at imagery from the past to see how long it had been there.

In 1975, for instance, there appeared to be a black, box-like structure at the site, while the white disc-shaped structure we see now was present in 2003, so it definitely didn't 'crash' there recently.

One of the most plausible explanations is that it is some form of tank for catching rainwater.

There's also a chance that it could be some sort of science station for recording data.

As things stand, however, its exact purpose continues to remain unclear.

After close observation of the VLA, I think  the picture in question is of an astronomical radio observatory dish.   When the picture was taken, The construction of the dish wasn't finished.  Note the similarities between the picture in question and the dishes at the VLA.  The 'stairs' could be scaffolding used in construction.  Also, this location appears to be a Private piece of property. Or...it could be in a state of deconstruction.  I also looked at how observatory dishes are built.  They use cranes.

Yes.  The site is 13.71 miles from the Magdalena Rodeo Grounds.

since it is on the southern border of the Navajo reservation it could be something they are constructing.  They have several science research facilities, most of them are biology research, the desert willow was developed by them in the late 60's.   It is also possible that the VLA is leasing space from them to enhance their array.

Someone had mentioned there was once a rectangular/square structure on it at one point, could this be the exposed foundation? The concrete "footing", so to speak?

Work at the VLA site began in 1974, and NRAO personnel began moving to New Mexico in 1975. By October of 1975, the first VLA antenna was complete and used to observe a galaxy 50 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. Link It makes since that they would have had support buildings around.  Perhaps one of the buildings was the 'black box' mentioned in the article, which also mentions that it is possible that it is could be  some sort of science station for recording data.

They do have support buildings around and did when they were building the first antenna.   It is a remote area and there had to be someplace to store the equipment.   Now there are several buildings, one is an  information building with a slide show room.   I recommend putting it on your bucket list on your way to Las Vegas or where ever you might be going in the south west.   It isn't an all day place unless the weather is really good, but it does take some driving to get there.   From Albuquerque it is almost 2 hours.

I think you should take a day trip out there and take some pictures of the site in question.

I have been out there and may have some photos.   I will look through my files and see if I can find some. It was a fun trip my cousins, my daughter and grandson took a few years ago.   At the time they putting in another dish so it may have grown since I was there.
