Could this be California's official state cryptid ? Image Credit: Midjourney
An elusive cryptozoological creature could soon be given an official status in the state of California.
It would seem that every state and country needs its own cryptid (a term used to describe a creature that is rumored to exist, but for which there is no definitive scientific evidence).
Scotland, for instance, would undoubtedly consider the Loch Ness monster to be its official cryptid.
But what about the US state of California ?
Earlier this month, Assemblyman Chris Rogers introduced a new bill at the California State Assembly (number 666) seeking to designate Bigfoot as the state's official cryptozoological creature.
The bill was originally intended as a bit of an inside joke - acting as more of a placeholder to be replaced with official state business at a later date.
Instead, it ended up making news across the state and beyond.
"The joke would be that when we amended the bill, the Bigfoot bill would disappear, it would be elusive, it would go away like Bigfoot in our area is known to do," said Rogers.
Ironically, the bill has since gone to on to generate far more attention than other, more important bills and has sparked calls for Bigfoot to be genuinely designated as the state's official cryptid.
Whether it will actually happen, however, remains to be seen.
So are they going to be a protected species as they should be round the world or haven't, they defined that? We call the Yowies here in Australia, they move up and down our inner coast line, in families of 5-10, super cool knowing they exist now but not knowing if our 6 toe friends are indigenous to earth or not
