Two residents managed to capture footage of the object when it appeared above the city back in August.
Exhibiting an unusual black V-shape with two rows of lights illuminating each side, the peculiar object was observed over Los Angeles for a period of 28 minutes from around 11p.m. back on August 28th.
The sighting quickly attracted a great deal of attention after it was submitted to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC).
"It stayed in the same area for about 25-30 minutes for the first time I saw it," one of the witnesses wrote. "It moved around a little bit but didn't go too far."
"At the end it just flew off in the south direction until I couldn't see it anymore."
Some speculated that the object was some sort of advanced craft, while others dismissed it as little more than a drone - perhaps one used as part of an aerial light show or promotional stunt.
According to UFO researcher and filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee, the former is more likely.
"I'm convinced that a lot of famous UFO incidents are basically highly advanced terrestrial technology that is 30 to 40 years ahead of what we think they have," he told Mail Online.
According to NUFORC, there have been several similar sightings over Los Angeles this year.
That or another closely related project I would guess. However, we have had some eagle-eyed posters here who have been able to identify some unique balloons in some cases.
The main premise behind stealth as it applies to current aircraft development is the radar signature and to a lesser degree heat signature. Reduced visual detection, while desired, is only minimized by the paint applied and when the craft is flown. No explanation why it would have it's lights on though. If a recently acknowledged craft was caught by only 2 people in a city of almost 4 million, that isn't that much of a failure really.
Way back in the day when I was a resident skeptic with a paranormal group, I recall a member's photo of a ufo complete with red and green navigation lights. Thing is, it wasn't the first time I'd seen a photo of an alleged ufo sporting the same.
I'm thinking more along the lines of a small LED drone or kite. It could be that 2000 people saw it but were able to identify it as a drone or kite, hence decided not to post a video. For example, look at this triangular craft performing 90-degree turns at Mach 5! We have no craft capable of doing this! (sarcasm)
The NUFORC report is here and includes photos and videos. NUFORC thinks it's a kite, and so do I. Specifically, the "Outdoor Fun Sports New 2m Power Delta LED Kite with Handle and Line Good Flying" on Amazon. Not sure I'm allowed to post a link to a shopping site. Here's a comparison:
