Retired general William Neil McCasland had many links to government conspiracies and the UFO phenomenon.
It's a mystery that continues to grip the nation and now, two weeks later, the mysterious disappearance of the 68-year-old seems no closer to being solved.
The strangeness began on February 27th when McCasland left his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico and vanished without a trace, with nobody having seen him at all since that time.
According to his wife, he had left home without his phone or his watch - a fact that she found particularly odd as, being an experienced outdoorsman, this isn't something he would normally do.
He also suffers from a medical condition that makes his disappearance even more of a concern.
According to reports, the lack of progress in finding him has prompted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to get involved in the hope of determining what might have happened to him.
The only thing we know so far, courtesy of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, is that no evidence of foul play has been found.
An appeal for local security footage and witness sightings has also gone out across the area.
Back during his US Air Force days, McCasland was often associated with the UFO phenomenon.
He once headed up the Air Force Research Laboratory at the Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Ohio where he managed a $2.2 billion science and technology program.
The base has long been associated with black projects and rumors of reverse-engineered alien technology and is also the place where the Roswell UFO debris was said to have been taken.
It was also connected to Project Blue Book which looked at thousands of UFO cases.
Whether or not any of this has anything to do with his disappearance, however, remains unclear.
