Firm succeeds in hatching live chicks from artificial eggs for the first time

Image: AI-generated (Midjourney) According to reports, Colossal Biosciences - the company which recently claimed to have brought the dire wolf back from extinction by creating live pups - has now succeeded in creating an 'artificial egg' capable of hatching live chicks.

To demonstrate the new system, scientists took chicken embryos and then placed them inside a special incubator that is designed to essentially mimic a natural egg.

After a few days, the chicks hatched out very much alive and well.The firm is hoping to use this technology to eventually de-extinct the moa bird, but it can also be used to help incubate and hatch chicks belonging to currently endangered species too.

It may even be possible that, one day in the distant future, something like this could be used to create live dinosaurs - though this is not Colossal Biosciences' current goal.

The company has come under some scrutiny in recent months over its claims of resurrecting dire wolves, with many scientists arguing that the cubs it created are not actually true dire wolves.

Still, if the new artificial egg system actually does work, it should prove to be a significant breakthrough.
