Orange UFO over Jacksonville

This story was submitted to the site by Taylor00 from Jacksonville NC, 1986.
It was within minutes of 3am that we (my date and myself) looked up in ghastly surprise. My blood began rushing to my head, my body froze and my eyes could only watch. I did not know if I should feel horror, run, or what ? The confusion hit every part of my body and mind. My brain told my soul it must be the second coming. The sky was opening up!

As the deep orange small circle began to spread in diameter, it soon appeared as if it was going to swallow the sky. It was floating down. Down had a very long way to go! As it did ...float that is, it continued to spread just like a parachute would spread if you were hanging beneath it. Over our heads and from thousands of feet up, until if it truly came much closer you would swear you could touch it.

I had no desire to touch it, or be captured by it, but so stunned with its presence I could only stand there in awe. What had felt at first to be the sky opening up initially made me think, "well damn, he is going to come out of the sky, oh well...Im good with God, but now? This sucks". Funny what we think of in weird events as a 21-year-old. I had never bought into the Christian religion of "Salvation, being only through one way..." Etc. but I stood there waiting to see a figure come out of the sky, because I WAS watching it open up! I had my 18 month old daughter in side the house with my roommate who was babysitting for me so I could take my girlfriend out that night without worrying what time I came back.

Through my mind as I watched this event unfold I thought of my baby girl, I wanted to escape the frozen state I was in and run to her crib, get her in my arms safe with me. Even if that meant we got sucked up in the sky, I was NOT losing my daughter for even a moment.

All kinds of thoughts rushed through my brain in a matter of seconds. I stood there for maybe 90-120 seconds as this orange hole in the sky continued to spread and feeling as if it would engulf us or something, suck us in...or Christ himself come floating down! I did not know. I could not move I was so transfixed on what my eyes were seeing. It was massive in size it its greatest spread, easily 2 miles wide.

I don't recall anything specific that Kate said. She stood there next to me, just as transfixed as I. I remember each of us asking, half asking the other, "what the...? ".... Nothing could be said out-loud much because I am quite sure her brain was tripping as much as mine.

As the seconds slowed to a snails pace, each having it's own specific presence in the normal fluidity of time passing, a second became its own singular identity, clearly present as it passed. That is until suddenly without warning it was as if someone shoved time into overdrive!

The orange hole was no longer a hole, it reversed itself! As it backed up in this reversed state, it was sudden, deliberate and very swift! It was then we both would later tell each other, that we became aware it was indeed an object of some sort, that had what appeared to be a massive opening with a soft looking material, I struggle to describe as a parachute, for a lack of words. As it had been lowering it was as such, but when it went in to reverse...it was so swift and the formation of the orange circle grew smaller so fast you could not dare take your eyes away, or it would have been simply gone.

We both watched as it faded in the distance, growing smaller and smaller. It moved northward with some easterly movement taking it over the ocean, or up the coast - we stood only 12-15 miles from the ocean shoreline in my yard.

Once it was gone Kate looked at me, and I at her. Before I could really say a word she jumped into action, " I'm calling dispatch, we can't be the only ones and they will be getting flooded with calls, find out what it is, come on" as she climbed right up my steps and already inside before she stopped talking.

It was 1986, the phone hung on the wall right by my kitchen table. She called punching the buttons rapidly. The private line to dispatch rang twice before being picked up. I could partially hear Marcie's voice. I listened as Katie excitedly asked Marcie if the call volume for a UFO sighting had everyone on crisis alert. Margie absolutely burst out laughing!

"Kate how much have you and your boyfriend been drinking? Glad you called me, and got me, you can't drink and have illusions and call them in!" Then back to her full gut leveled laugh.

Kate was eventually able to get Marcie to at least call the airport tower and see if anything at Albert J. Airport had been noted in the sky. When she did check there was nothing. Neither Kate or I had been drinking that night. Unless one beer for her and Soda for me can explain BOTH of us seeing the same thing.
After that night Kate and I dated a few more months and in the natural flow of things moved on. I moved back up north into PA to attend college and raise my daughter as a single dad. Something in the 80's and 90's you did not see often. It would be a couple years later that I would run into Kate to find out she had persisted in her quest for an answer to what we saw that night.

I had been in town no more than two days visiting my grandma when I had blue lights in my rear view. Pulling over hoping immediately to skate with a warning for speeding, I find Kate standing in my window looking down at me.

"You don't really think you can come to town and me not hear about it do you Taylor?"

"Apparently not" I responded with half a grin. She was such a egotistical woman, largely why I had no interest in her. Certainly not enough to have ever stayed.

"You remember what we saw?" She asked with her voice and facial expressions changing in a sudden shift. I stared at her for a moment, just studying her.

"Yea, of course".

"I kept looking for answers, would you believe after months and months, I get told it was a missile they shot off up on Langley, we saw down here."

I looked up through the window and asked her, "you believe that's what we saw?"

"No. I know better, you would have been told, your dad would have known too." Then she scraped her feet around for a moment on the pavement, " I never said a word about who I was with, or your dad".

"Kate, if it had gone out from there its possible my dad was not aware, he had retired. But he assured me anything from there would not have gone in a direction to be seen down here" I paused a minute... " Kate, I believe it was NASA, or a UFO from elsewhere...either way, we saw a UFO, it has never been identified, makes it a UFO. They aren't going to tell you what they themselves don't know. And they are sure not going to tell you what they do know. That includes my Dad, he is not telling me, but if he says something is not, you can bank on it. He never lies, he omits, he has to."

"Yea, I know." She looked at me with half a smile, but sad eyes. She had really wanted facts she was never going to get. She had started to come to terms with it finally. I grew up the son of a high ranking military Air Force Officer, my dad was in charge of everything air born that went and came off that base.

I watched neat things happen in the sky as a kid right from my bedroom window. I grew up my childhood right outside of NASA and Langley in VA. I had learned a very long time ago that truth is very subjective and by seeking truth and answers, you need to define exactly what that means for yourself, or how will you measure it?

We saw an orange glowing UFO, that night in the sky and be it from NASA or elsewhere, that is my truth. A non disputable truth. By my own way of measuring. I also rode in my first electric car in 1972, it ran totally on electricity. But we did not have that technology back then according to the government, who owned the car my 8 year-old fanny rode around in one Saturday afternoon all those years ago.
