The honeymoon couple

This story was submitted to the site by Caro from Tybee Island, GA.
This happened soon after I met my husband, at that time both of us were in our middle years. We had been at the beach on a rather murky day in mid-March. We headed home in the pickup, he was driving. We drove west on the road through the extensive salt marsh. The tide was up and there were pools here and there reflecting the sunset colors and a light ground fog rose in wisps The scene was beautiful. It was getting dark quick and there were no street lights on HW 80. There is a lot of traffic and no stop lights for a long stretch, so traffic tends to exceed the 55 mph speed limit. My man is a careful driver and was actually going a little slower.

A few yards ahead of us I thought I saw something pass in front of our headlights. I was startled... crossing that dark and busy road would be very dangerous and there would be no reason to cross. Marsh on either side, no stores or houses for miles. I warned B. and he slowed down to about 30 mph. No other cars were behind us or coming toward us for this short time. We both saw what I am about to describe.
There was a young man walking on the south side of the two lane road. He had blondish hair pulled into a long ponytail. He wore long red basketball type shorts and a baggy yellow t-shirt. He had his hands in his pockets and he glared in our direction. He looked way teed off. At this point B. had really slowed down. Next there was a young woman, she was right in the driver's side window. She wore a tan dress with a palm leaf motif. Her hair was dark, her eyes grey, round and bugging out. Her mouth hung open slack. I spoke to B. I said 'Oh my God, she's in shock. She's been raped or there's been an accident and she is hurt'. But we could see way out over the flat marsh, and we saw no accident.

We were confused and did not think of stopping, which is completely out of character for either of us. I then ask him if he saw that...he blinked his lights at a couple of oncoming cars to indicate they should use caution.Then...we thought about what we had seen. It was dim and the only bright light was our headlights...how did we see color and detail ? How did we see so much detail when when we were driving right by and how did that girl seem to hang in the window that way ? We were driving even at a low speed she would not have been able to stay framed in the window like that.

Somebody told me once that we had seen the 'Honeymoon Couple' who, as their name indicates, were on their honeymoon when they died in a wreck. Each year new death altars are erected by the grieving on the road between Tybee and Savannah and each year the DOT takes them down eventually. Why did this couple come to us? Maybe it was because our circumstances were similar. We were a man and woman in love. Were they warning us of danger? Or maybe it was a malevolent attempt to cause us to wreck also. I will never forget them.
