I'd like to start by saying nothing like this has ever happened before or since. It was the most bizarre thing I've ever experienced, and no, I have never taken drugs and I don't drink. It was my weekend off, and I was enjoying a quiet evening sitting up in bed reading a good book. I lived alone in an apartment with my 2 cats, so no one else was there except for us.
As I read, I kept seeing a brief flash of light in my peripheral vision, but every time I turned my head to look, nothing was there. I thought it might have been a sign of eye strain, but I was really enjoying the book so I tried to ignore it. Unfortunately, the "flashes" were extremely distracting and pure reflex had me glancing over every time I perceived one, although each flash only lasted about the length of time it would take you to blink, so I could never actually catch sight of one within my full vision. By the time I'd turn my head and look, it was over.
The "flashes" went on for about half an hour, always only in my peripheral vision and never in any particular sequence, so I couldn't predict when the next one would happen. After half an hour of this it was becoming very annoying. Then I glanced over and saw something I will never forget.
It was just there, a tiny pinpoint of light, maybe as big around as the tip of a pen, hovering just below the ceiling to my right. I was so surprised that all I could do was to stare, trying to figure out what it was I was seeing. But what happened next happened so fast that I never had a chance to even contemplate a possible explanation.
The tiny pinprick of light began to expand, getting bigger and bigger until it was maybe about 2 feet wide. By then I could clearly see that it looked like the entrance to a tunnel. It appeared to be made of light. Within this "tunnel" the interior walls were spinning around like a vortex. And as if that wasn't bizarre enough, I was looking at this from an angle, and from the side of the "entrance" there was nothing there. In other words, I could only see the dimensions of this tunnel by looking through the entrance. It was big enough that a person could have crawled through it...if it was "solid", and I half expected to see someone or something emerge.
It was both beautifully mesmerizing and terrifying. Then, after only a few heartbeats, it suddenly and quickly shrank until it was just a pinprick of light again, and vanished. I have no idea what it was that I saw that night. Was it a portal to another dimension? A doorway to the spiritual realm? Some kind of anomaly that could be explained by a good knowledge of physics? I will always wonder.
If anyone has had a similar experience, I would love to hear it.
