Mystery dark line caught on camera

A strange dark line in the sky has been photographed over Honeymoon Island, Florida.
The phenomenon was caught on camera by Mike Weight as he strolled along the beach at around noon on Wednesday. The thin, dark line seemed to stretch from the water all the way up to the clouds. "At first I thought it was an optical illusion because it was like a dark piece of sky with a light sky background," said Mike. "You could see through it."

Puzzled, the 73-year-old sent the picture to the Tampa Bay Times with a note asking what the line could be, however their chief meteorologist didn't know what it was either. The photograph has since been distributed to several agencies but nobody has yet been able to offer a conclusive explanation to what Mike had witnessed. "I think we're all just guessing," he said.
Mike Weight was strolling the beach at Honeymoon Island about noon Wednesday when he saw something weird. A black line appeared against the bright blue sky, shooting down from a cloud into the gulf.

Nicely done, UM detectives! A minor point - I would suggest Sundew was actually first to propose what appears to be the correct answer, so credit where due.. I remember the Pentax K1000. The problem with the hair idea is that the hair is usually between the lens and the body. This can't happen with a camera phone. Also, hair is never generally straight while sitting on a lens......there would be some curl in it. Second part is very true, you don't often see straight hairs.. But it is possible in any camera device.. I'll grant you it is very unlikely in a camera phone as the camera is usually a... [More]

Anyways, back to the topic - I wonder if the person who took the shot didn't notice the contrails, whether they were captured in other photos he took, or whether perhaps it was actually just the nature of that cloud's internal composition that might have serendipitously created the shadow.. I'm rather tempted to think that is the real explanation, given that weird patch on the base of the cloud. Yes. I think a 2nd pic with a contrail would be 100% proof.

I saw one of these a couple weeks back while driving. My girlfriend and I had no idea what it was. I randomly came on this website and saw this article and that it was just too strange that someone else saw it too. By the way I live in California.
